the invisible keyboard OJ1*

Touch typing, remember..in fourth grade or sometime around that time period when we had portable keyboards and programs where we could practice touch typing. Trying to compete with everyone in class to see who typed the fastest or who had minimal errors. I tried finding an image of the portable keyboard or the program, but there were no images to find! Shocking! To think Google would have everything..

I really do appreciate the lessons we did at school, and to think they were stupid and pointless. But it was always fun being able to use THE computer! As a journalist we need to be excellent, speedy typers - for those deadlines we have to meet, writing stories after stories, typing up a script in the last minute before air time, and trying to quote someone at a press conference. A new program/app/concept I had just came across was ASETNIOP, which has a potential of helping journalists type quicker..maybe?

What it is, is a virtual keyboard that only has eight letters A-S-E-T-N-I-O-P. Then how do we use the other 18 alphabets? We use chords, by pressing two or more letters at a time.
Being 'experimental' I gave it a kick without any prior tutorials..and here's what I came up with..
Well, apparently you get better at it with practice.. I'm not too sure how quick it'll take me to learn this new method. But what its benefits are it saves space on the screen, so you have more viewing space where usually the keyboard would take half of the screen, and it saves finger movements? Which may mean faster typing. How useful would it be for live blogging? Grabbing a quote from someone without them having to repeat it several times.

If you are really interested to learn, jump onto the website and master the Asetniop. This is probably what your kids will be learning in school. Make a start so you can keep up with your kids' tech savy-ness. Everything is getting too technical now!

online, online, read all about it! OJ1*

It's researched, compiled and written, so it must be true. The Pew Research Center did a survey on American news consumption and you guessed it.. online news platforms are on the rise!
While radio and newspaper has drastically declined, television news is slowly.. steadily declining. But honestly, my prediction for television news will always be there - people want to come home from work and turn the TV on. OK, not necessarily turning onto the news; but it's nice to tune in what's happened during the day.
Now, the decline is radio could actually be the introduction of MP3 players, I hardly ever turn to the radio in the car. I plug my iPod in and soothes my car ride, it is unless I am utterly bored with the amount of time I play Coldplay on repeat THEN I switch on the radio. And that, I don't even listen to the news.. or the news segment is not even on at the time.
And it is quite safe to say, newspaper is not helping with the environment..how many of you really RECYCLE the newspaper?! By subscribing to the New York Times on your iPad you feel as though you're somewhat helping the environment and at the same time you can obtain local news from newspapers around the world. And it is much more convenient, isn't it?
I am not going against print news..because myself, I would like to have a career in the magazine industry. It's definitely a ride we need to keep up with..

the eyes of Florian Müller

What captured these photographs? NEW YORK!
But it was not the usual lights and brights of the city from say, the top of the Rockerfeller or the Empire building, or some rooftop of an abandoned loft. Ok, maybe it was taken from those places but it was the multiple exposures on top of another that grabbed my attention.

To me it captured New York perfectly. Its craziness of over-crowded. The uncertainty of what it is - a place of you know what you want out of it but you're lost in it. The shadow-like representing the skyscrapers' reflection hitting the cracked roads. The colours captured are colours you see of the streets. These photographs represent New York closely in a more intimate level. Müller thank you for sharing these with the world, especially myself.

I absolutely just love it. If only I had my Diana F+ camera with me on my trip... the things I could have created..I'll just have to fly back there.

serving jail time for tweeting OJ1*

Ever thought sending an 'innocent' tweet could keep a person who is on trial out of jail? Or have influence increasing the years they serve? This is called defamation.
The Victorian Police sent out a tweet, "arrest of man in relation to disappearance of Gillian Meagher", and not long afterwards news organisations began tweeting:

@abcnews #breaking news: a 41yo Coburg man has been arrested in relation to disappearance of missing ABC worker Jill Meagher

@theage Update: Man arrested over Jill Meagher case

The arrested man's name soon surfaced onto twitter feeds, and Facebook hate pages were created. Social media users made nasty comments about the alleged murderer of Meagher.

Commenting on social media today can be an act of defamatory, and people who are involved in publication can be sued for contempt of court. This could potentially jeopardise a trial, preventing justice to be served.
"The risks involved are prejudicing the outcome of the trial, poisoning the potential jury pool, " Senior Associate Trenton Schreurs said.
After vicious comments were made, journalists and professionals became aware of the number of tweets that were published about the man who had been charged with the murder of Jill. Journalist Julie Posetti tweeted a warning for tweeters, "for those reporting/tweeting on the man's arrest in connection with Jill Meagher's disappearance, a guide to sub judice", providing a link.
"Journalists and the legal profession are aware of the risks, though perhaps the general public is not," Schreurs said.

Journalists have been taught and know the consequences of defamation. They are more likely to be liable for contempt and potentially lose their job. Schreurs agree that if everyone were at risk of losing their jobs as well it could prevent the publishing of nasty comments.
"However, I believe that this may lead to a public debate concerning freedom of expression and free speech also.
"If people were at risk of losing jobs for publishing comments on say Twitter, then this may lead to an uprising on that front."
This leads to the issue where the Internet and social media now plays a part of being a news platform, where anyone with access to the Internet can be journalists.

Research from The Pew Research Center's Project show twitter users are more likely to obtain their news through their smartphones, this means people can send in comments instantly. This instant news update allows the public to engage in a breaking news story. For example, the Jill Meagher murder case. This is when social media users need to be aware of what is tweeted and published. But social media has not replaced the traditional way of obtaining news. Facebook users get their news from friends and family while Twitter users tend to follow news organisations and individual journalists.

Social Commentator, NBN Champion and former journalists and program maker Andrew Heslop said a defence lawyer would track down the author of a comment made on Twitter and Facebook to prove his client has been defamed.
"Every interaction leaves a digital trail even if the comment is deleted.
"It's very easy to commit sub-judice contempt and compromise a person's right to a fair trial."
Heslop explains the issues of social media and defamation in an ABC News interview, also he wrote for The Drum telling a story where he could have been sued for contempt.

Tips for social media users

Heslop said to think twice before commenting.
"If it's a criminal matter take a second and put yourself in the place of the alleged offender.
"Think, then tweet."
In an article by Crikey, media law expert Mark Polden stated three things you should not do:

  • Commentary on the guilt or the innocence of the accused
  • Details of prior criminal convictions or charges
  • The publication of photos of the accused
The family of Jill Meagher requested all hate and suspect pages on Facebook to be taken down.

The Australian reported, Ms Meagher's husband told the public to be mindful of the comments they wish to say in social media as it could damage legal proceedings. These pages were prejudicial to the case and has been shut down.

Facebook advert OJ1*

It's not just Apple products that need TV commercial to get their products out there, but social media Facebook has launched its first TV commercial! Not that Facebook needs anymore recognition and branding to gather more people.
But Mark Zuckerberg did, and with the help from an advertising agency in Portland; Wieden Kennedy they created a 90 second ad.
The ad pretty much tells us we NEED Facebook to be able to connect with other people.. is that brainwash? That Facebook is similar to chairs, bridges, basketball..
Here's the video..

If Facebook is trying to convince us we need it in our lives to communicate and connect with people, I think the world is relying just a bit too much on social media - which is a little but scary. Alas, I do have a Facebook and Twitter account that I religiously use for networking and sourcing news, there is no way I will replace my connectivity with my friends and family via these platforms. The memorabilia of physically seeing someone and being able to interact with them is irreplaceable.

T-it up, yo

No, not as in golf.. nor the initial of my name. As in t-shirts.
It's Summer time now, well Spring - I classify it as Summer. How is Spring this hot??
Anyway, when it's hot and sweaty outside all we want to do is not wear clothes really. Just wanting to pop on a t-shirt and shorts, and leave.

These t-shirts are just what I've been looking for. I am sick, sick, sick and tired of these "graphic" tees. Can I get a hell-yeah?
New thing on the street is, mockery of high-end designer logo t-shirts.
These are a few of my favourite. Let me know if you find anymore.. &here I'll even share with you where you can find and buy them.
